ABOUT US:
When we say we're a longtime local company, we really mean it.
Seattle Bank's history dates back to 1944 when Ben Smith Sr. started Seattle Mortgage Company to help veterans returning from World War II purchase their homes. He built a strong local business and in 1955, he handed the thriving mortgage company over to his son, Ben Smith, Jr. and his son-in-law, Robert Story, Sr.
These two leaders established Seattle Mortgage Company as the city's strongest mortgage company, and the firm soon earned a reputation as the leading lender for first-time homebuyers.
Over the years, the company expanded into other areas of financial services, including reverse mortgages, escrow services, and banking. In 1999, Seattle Savings Bank opened its doors. The original business plan was to operate the bank out of the mortgage company branches with limited product offerings on the deposit side and a focus on residential construction on the lending side.
The next generation of the Smith and Story families took over leadership of the much larger and more diversified company under the umbrella name of Seattle Financial Group in 2006. In October 2007, Seattle Financial Group redeemed all of the outstanding shares of stock that were previously owned by the Smith Family. At the time of the redemption, the Story Family interests became sole owners.
In 2008, the Story family chose to refocus solely on the banking and mortgage operations and committed to develop Seattle Savings Bank into a full-service consumer and business bank. Ellen Sas was hired to lead the transition as the new president and chief executive officer. In 2009 Seattle Savings Bank officially changed its name to Seattle Bank.
