ABOUT HAPO

Welcome to HAPO Community Credit Union! At HAPO we put our members first!

What is a credit union? Glad you asked! Credit unions are financial institutions formed by an organized group of people with a common bond. Members of credit unions pool their assets to provide loans and other financial services to each other. In HAPO's case, we were formed by a group of non-exempt workers at the Hanford nuclear site in 1953 to provide a place to save and borrow money. It's simple; you deposit money at HAPO, and we loan that money out to another member. Credit unions traditionally offer lower lending rates and higher savings rates since we don't have outside stockholders to pay. The members of the credit union are the owners, so any profit made by the credit union is returned to the member-owners in the form of great rates, free or low cost services, and dividends.

Sounds great, how can you join? It's easy! Membership in a credit union depends on that credit union's charter. HAPO is a state-chartered credit union so anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in the state of Washington can become a member! All you have to do is visit one of our convenient locations and open a savings account with an initial minimum deposit of $25. There are some exceptions including accounts for minors and accounts opened for Dealer Direct loans. Speaking of Dealer Direct loans, they are another way you can become a member! If you finance your vehicle at the dealer through HAPO you are automatically a member. The same is true if you take out any other type of loan through HAPO, including our great mortgage loans.

One more note: At HAPO, your funds are federally insured up to $250,000 and backed by the full faith and credit of the United States Government by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), the strongest deposit insurance fund in the country. HAPO also does business in accordance with the federal Fair Housing Law and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act.
