In 1906, a local group led by real estate agent James McDowell founded the Olympia Building and Loan Association. The association was founded on a philosophy of promoting home ownership, thrift, and strong community involvement. Sound business practices enabled Olympia Building and Loan to weather the Depression of the 1930s at a time when many other institutions had to close. In 1934 it adopted its present name, Olympia Federal Savings and Loan Association.
Olympia Federal began its expansion to a multi-branch institution in 1972 with the opening of our West Olympia branch. In 1978, the Belfair branch opened, followed by the Lacey branch in 1981 and the Tumwater branch in 1983 which later relocated to a new multi-story building in 2002. In 1995 the Yelm Highway branch opened and a seventh location opened in July of 2006 in the Hawks Prairie area of Lacey.
Olympia Federal Savings turned 100 years old in 2006. But, it certainly does not look it’s age. With online banking, and innovative checking and lending programs, Oly Fed is a modern organization dedicated to serving the needs of its customers.
Oly Fed has provided local residents with great service and 102 years of financial integrity since its founding. The organization is committed to being a good neighbor and a community supporter now, and for the next 100 years. It is a brand new century for Oly Fed, but the commitment to customers and community has never changed.
